The Business of Influence: Vogue and Social Capital

The Business of Influence: Vogue and Social Capital

In class this week we watched the film ‘The September Issue’, which focuses on Vogue and the process that they go through to produce their coveted September issue. The film gave us a behind the scenes peak at what it takes to make a magazine at such a high caliber. The film opened my eyes to how harsh the industry is, even when you have been in the industry for years. The relationship between Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington is very interesting to me because you don’t think that the vision they have would be more in sync than they were. Lots of money, time, and effort goes into making a magazine like Vogue so I’m sure that Anna has to always look at the big picture, while everyone else is focused on their specific contribution. That thinking is what gives Anna the reputation that she has, she can see things on a bigger scale. I think that the most inspiring and surprising thing from the film is the fashion designer that was featured Thakoon. It showed how personal a major company like Vogue can get and use its power to help build the career of an emerging fashion professional.

Media is moving away from print and online and producing more and more ordinary people to success. Forbes magazine came out with a list of ‘Tope Influencers’ My favorite influencer from this list and in general is Zoe Sugg other wise known as Zoella online. She is a British youtuber, blogger, and entrepreneur. She began her blog and youtube in her childhood bedroom in a small country town of England. Now, nine years later, she has twelve million subscribers on her original youtube channel, an author of three books, and haves beauty and lifestyle products in stores like Target, Super Drug, and Boots. Zoe is one of my favorite influencer because she seems to be one of the most genuine people on the internet. Majority of youtubers can’t make it through a video without an ad or plug for a company, and she can go a long time without doing that. Even though she has had a crazy amount of success with her career, it doesn’t change who she is on a fundamental level. Also she takes her channels more seriously than a lot of girls who are doing youtube in the same categories, influencers can sometimes make it feel like their videos are a hassle and that we are lucky that they make a video at all. I think all of those characteristics that she has is what makes her so successful. I think what I can take from her is that you have to be genuine with everything that you do, and that if you don’t like what you are doing it will show.
